Speaking to the Today program on BBC Radio 4, the general, who ruled Pakistan from 1999 to 2007 after starring in a coup, said he will return to earth at some point, and denied that there will wait for a possible charge of treason .

‘There is no charge against me. There are other dangers. Take a chance, but I will when the time comes, “said the former president, who resigned from office in 2008 to avoid an impeachment process against him by the coalition government.

Asked if the danger that awaits him in his country is being killed, he replied: “It’s a possibility, yes.

During the interview, Musharraf also discussed the situation in Afghanistan and accused the United Kingdom and the United States’ lack of leadership “when defending the need to keep their troops in that country, neighboring Pakistan.

He stressed that the Taliban can be defeated as long as Western leaders do not decide to withdraw its troops by the fear of becoming unpopular.

‘There is a failure of leadership. No one is telling people who ask that their soldiers return that would be the worst decision. It would be a mistake, “he said.

“People here (in the UK) or the United States think they are fighting in a war that is not yours’ he said.

‘When leaders do not say things to the ground for political reasons, the appeal of the mass is to return the soldiers, and would not be right, “he added.

Within moments of reaching the location — on the border of the Sangin and Musa
Qala areas of Helmand province ? the fighting died down.

L/Cpl Leather, of Stretford, Manchester, said: ?Fighting for your
brother, your protective family instincts kick in.

?We were meant to be driving straight to the patrol base and waiting there
ahead of an operation, but when I heard that they were under contact I
flagged it up and the others went ‘Right, let’s go’.

“As soon as we pulled up in the Ridgebacks the fighting died down and
they were able to come back to base.”

Less than 24 hours later the brothers were fighting side by side in an
operation to push back Taliban insurgents.

They and their brother-in-law, Sgt Paul Howarth, they dodged machine gun fire
and grades to uncover a cache of ammunition due to be used by the enemy.

L/Cpl Michael Leather, 22, received a special mention from his commanders for
the role he played in the mission.

C 17 Crash Is Still in Investigation

C-17s have survived missile attacks in Iraq and pilot mishaps in Aghanistan without casualty in recent years, including a surface-to-air hit in Baghdad in 2003 and a 2009 incident at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan where a C-17 landed on its belly – with its landing gears disabled.

A C-17A assigned to the service’s 3rd Wing at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska crashed on the base at 18:14 local time yesterday while “on a local training mission”, the service confirms.

Callers to the Olney Police Department said they saw a low-flying plane, and a spokesman for Sheppard AFB initially reported a crash, but then retracted the report.

Today marks the beginning of the end of the Afghan war. In some ways, nothing has changed. In his inauguration speech some months ago, President Hamid Karzai said he wanted Afghan security services to take over from foreign troops within three to five years. He has repeated that aim today, setting it at the upper limit.
