Fighting in his first bout since being inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in May, former welterweight champion Matt Hughes pulled off an unlikely win over black belt Ricardo Almeida. Hughes hammered Almeida with a left hand, which essentially knocked Almeida out on his feet.

Matt Hughes improved to 45-7 by choking out Ricardo Almeida (12-4) 3:15 into the first round of their welterweight bout. Hughes received a minimum of $260,000, including a $100,000 win bonus and $60,000 for the submission, for his first fight since being inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in May. Almeida took home $35,000.

Another reader says, Anderson Silva is one of the best fighters in the world, and I have all the respect in the world for him, but Sonnen also deserves respect. You guys squawk back and forth like children. Both men put on an amazing, entertaining fight. Silva is great, but he didn’t bow to Sonnen for nothing. I personally was routing for Sonnen, because cheering for Silva, is like going to a casino and cheering for the house to win. I love to watch world class underdogs take it to the best fighters, and put on legendary fights.

This is an intermediate step to what we hope is an entire career of Darrelle as a Jet,” GM Mike Tannenbaum said on a Monday morning conference call, “for him to retire a Jet, for him to hopefully go to the Hall of Fame one day as a Jet and for him to be in our ring of honor.”whose frustrations with the sometimes acrimonious negotiations this summer were evident on HBO’s Hard Knocks, was clearly elated that the schism between team and player had been closed.

One last-ditch effort to lure Revis back, as Ryan and Jets owner Woody Johnson flew to South Florida on Saturday to meet with the star cornerback. The Jets had previously expressed little optimism that they would be able to strike a deal with Revis in the near future, even as their season opener approached. This is an intermediate step to what we hope is an entire career of Darrelle as a Jet,” he said. “For him to retire a Jet, for him to hopefully go to the Hall of Fame one day as a Jet and for him to be in our ring of honor.”

The Jets’ front office seems willing to take its chances against Baltimore without Revis. The Ravens’ passing attack should be improved with the addition of wide receiver Anquan Boldin, but they’re not a spread-the-field, air-it-out offense. One NFL personnel executive, who didn’t want his name used, believes a Revis-less secondary would hold up against the Ravens. There were several references to Revis on the third episode of the show, including Bart Scott’s crack during a magic show on the team’s final night in Cortland.

On Wednesday, New York Jets coach; Rex Ryan has invited Darrelle Revis and his agents to clear the contract disputes between Jets and Revis. Ryan said that the Revis missed the training camp and the complete squad will be at meeting.

The Jets certainly seem perfect subjects, starting with the loquacious and charismatic Ryan, a Baltimore assistant during the show’s first season in 2001, and trash-talking linebacker Bart Scott. GQ quarterback Mark Sanchez, All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis and newly signed LaDainian Tomlinson are also sure to get plenty of camera time.

“I have to tell you that in all of the years that we’ve done this, this is the right team at the right time with the right coach, the right transparency, philosophy … this is going to be a big hit,” said HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg, who acknowledged being a longtime Jets fan. “We have our Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg in Rex Ryan.”

The sixth installment of the series that follows teams through camp will debut Aug. 11.

The team released a statement Wednesday trumpeting a “major media announcement” at noon Thursday at their training facility in Florham Park, featuring owner Woody Johnson, GM Mike Tannenbaum and coach Rex Ryan.

The series is sure to produce great theater for HBO viewers, considering the characters on the Jets, including Ryan, probably the most colorful coach in the NFL and marquee quarterback Mark Sanchez, lockdown cornerback Darrelle Revis and future Hall of Fame running back LaDainian Tomlinson.

Lightning causes Jets to cut practice short

CORTLAND, N.Y. ?
The New York Jets got some hard-hitting, goal-line practice in Thursday morning.

Then, the heavy rains came and the session was cut short after 70 minutes because of a lightning warning.

“That’s not bad weather,” defensive tackle Kris Jenkins said, smiling. “It’s football weather.”

The players worked through a drenching rain for most of practice before warning sirens wailed around the SUNY Cortland campus. Coach Rex Ryan ended things shortly after fans and media — along with Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath in attendance — were told to leave the field.

“We hadn’t really counted on this,” a rain-soaked Ryan said. “But, it’s a great opportunity to be able to throw a wet football.”

The skies had cleared by the afternoon, and the team was holding its special teams practice.

While All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis missed his fourth straight day of practice because of a contract dispute, it was Jenkins’ first time in full pads since training camp began. He got on the field for some snaps Wednesday after starting camp on the active-physically unable to perform list.

Jenkins missed much of last season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, and had a graft from the hamstring used to repair it. Despite the wet conditions, Jenkins had no reservations about being out there.

“The water was actually good for me,” he said. “It softens the grass up. For heavy guys, it makes it easier on our shins. Plus, if the grass gives, it’s harder for me to get hurt with the slipping.”

Before the heaviest rains came, NFL Films unveiled its “Chopper Cam” while filming HBO’s “Hard Knocks.” It’s a 25-pound remote-controlled mini-helicopter that’s mounted with an HD camera. The “Chopper Cam” is battery-powered, can fly up to 90 mph and can stay in the air for up to five hours.

“As it was flying around, I’m like, ‘Give me a football,’” Ryan said, drawing laughs. “That’s the first thing you want to do is see if you can knock it down, but I’m not so sure about that.”

Grover Cleveland Alexander Match Tournament

vision for many months afterwards, making him a liability as a pitcher. Galesburg soon sold the afflicted player to the Indianapolis Indians, but this relationship ended almost before it began when the vision-challenged pitcher accidentally broke three of the manager’s ribs with his first pitch. He then was sold to the Syracuse Chiefs, but by the time the season began, Alexander’s vision was clear. In that 1910 season, Alexander had twenty-nine wins along with fifteen shutouts for the Chiefs.

Grover Cleveland “Old Pete” Alexander (February 26, 1887 – November 4, 1950) was an American professional baseball pitcher. He played in Major League Baseball for the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs, and St. Louis Cardinals. He was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1938.

Many baseball players today are hoping to get on the path on the Alexander. He is the one of the legends of the baseball and the same with Ronald Reagan .

His most famous victim was Tony Lazzeri of the Yankees. In the seventh inning of the final game of the 1926 WS, with the Cardinals ahead 3-2, the Yankees had two out and the bases loaded. Alexander, who’d won two games, including a complete game the day before, relieved for St. Louis. On four knee-high pitches, he struck out Lazzeri, then pitched two more hitless innings to wrap up the World Championship.

Don Coryell Dies At The Age Of 81

“He was a warrior to the very end. He actually came home for one day over the Father’s Day weekend, and we hoped he’d be home longer,” said Lewis, of San Diego. “He was an incredible father and an incredible man.”

Coryell’s death on Thursday was announced early Friday by officials with the San Diego Chargers, where Coryell served as the head coach of the Dan Fouts led Chargers between 1978 and 1986 to lead one of the most prolific passing attacks in the hstory of the National Football League.

Don Coryell (October 17, 1924 – July 1, 2010) was a former American football coach, who coached in the NFL first with the St. Louis Cardinals from 1973–1977 and then the San Diego Chargers from 1978-1986. He was well-known for his innovations to football’s passing offense. Coryell’s offense was commonly known as “Air Coryell”. He was inducted into the San Diego Chargers Hall of Fame in 1986. Coryell was a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.

“It’s crazy that when you look back at the history of this city, he got hired on the same day as that PSA crash,” said Hank Bauer, who was a running back and special teams star with the Chargers then. “That really was one of the darkest days in this city’s history and it became one of the brightest days in the history of sports.
