The scale of the onslaught has been revealed by the most detailed analysis of
Moon craters ever carried out by scientists.

A team led by researchers at Brown University in the US used a laser altimeter
on board Nasa’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter to identify and map a total of
5,185 asteroid craters on the Moons surface. All of the craters are at
least 20km in diameter.

They found that the largest craters tend to be clustered in regions where the
surface of the Moon is older.

In areas where the surface is newer ? having been formed by subsequent lava
flows ? the researchers found the average crater size is significantly
smaller.

The evidence supports the view that the Moon and the Earth endured a
bombardment of large asteroids around 3.9 billion years ago.

This is thought to have come to a halt a few hundred of millions of years
later, when Jupiter and Saturn settled into their orbits and began to exert
a different gravitational pull on the asteroid belt from where the missiles
originated.

Since then, we have generally escaped the largest asteroids hurtling through space.

James W Head III, who led the research published in the journal Science,
said that the findings “are telling us something about the infancy of
the solar system.”

He added: “It is clear we can find out and learn so much more from future
missions, robotic or otherwise. There is so much to do.”

Scientists are forced to analyse the Moon for clues our planets geological
history because erosion has destroyed evidence of distant asteroid strikes
on Earth.

Earth was formed around 4.5 billion years ago. Scientists are uncertain when
life first emerged, but evidence indicates that microorganisms existed
around 3.5 billion years ago.

The Bloom Box fuel cell system is a much better, or at least more reliable, alternative to solar power as a green energy source.a Bloom Box for the residential market could be out in 5 to 10 years for under $3,000. That’s a big improvement from the $800,000 box of today, but only time will tell if Sridhar is being overly optimistic. And in the coming years, big name competitors will probably catch up to Bloom with cost efficient boxes of their own.

Bloom Box reportedly proved twice as efficient as traditional power sources and produced 60% fewer emissions.According to the Guardian, Sridhar’s work draws on his research on generating oxygen for Nasa’s missions to Mars. Oxygen is drawn into one side of the cell, while a fuel, such as a natural gas or bio-fuel, is drawn into the other side. The two combine within the cell and produce a chemical reaction that creates energy without any burning or combustion.

They have just been too expensive to be viable until now, and Bloom still has to prove that its box can produce energy at a cheaper rate than other power sources. The box also produces carbon dioxide as a byproduct a potential downside depending on how much it generates.

In a gorgeous, if spare and compact, turn of phrase–did NASA’s public-relations team write this, one wonders, or did Cameron or someone else?–he describes how “on Earth, the oceans and air dance together, [and] ecosystems pulse with life.” Then the words turn ominous: “Ice retreats as the climate warms. And we’ve seen how our species can leave its mark.”

“There’s ‘X’ amount of time available, and I do want to do another Avatar film — probably two — and I’m talking to Fox about that now,” he told MTV News.

“There’s a strong possibility that I might insert one of these other movies in between before I do that,” he said. “It’s all up in the air right now.”

“When NASA ventures into space, it remembers to keep a steady eye on home,” Cameron said. “Its fleet of Earth-orbiting satellites constantly reveals our whole planet: its remotest places, its mysteries and the powerful influence of humans.”

The public service announcements feature “Avatar” film imagery and include computer animations and data from NASA’s fleet of Earth-observing satellites. NASA has 14 science satellites in orbit making cutting-edge global observations of the entire global system including the atmosphere, oceans, land surface, snow and ice.

Metor Shower tonight

It is very excited news for the people of US they know that every year in August ,the planets align just right and attracts the people toward itself.

Every year in August the people gathered in casino for enjoying with Meteor Shower.

Meteor Shower is a more popular occurrence because people do not have to use telescopes to see the action.

NASA had predicted that the first shower could take place shortly after 10PM on the East Coast.

All the night the Showers will be continue into Saturday

. Mars, Saturn, and Venus will all be included in the Perseid Meteor Shower in 2010. Mars, Saturn, and Venus will all be included in the Perseid Meteor Shower in 2010

Robonaut2 may have fantastic biceps , but raw muscle won’t put a man humanoid on the moon — that takes rockets. Rockets like the one in this RR-1 prototype lander, recently outfitted with a Guidance Embedded Navigator Integration Environment (GENIE) system to let the craft safely descend to the lunar surface. On June 23rd, NASA and partner Armadillo Aerospace put the system to the test, hoping its could figure out the complex algorithms necessary to process volumes of data from the laser altimeter, GPS and inertial sensors, and quickly enough to steer the rocket engine accordingly… but the machine performed like a charm. See its first solo flight in an inspiring, flame-filled video after the break, and skip to 4:12 for the good stuff.
