“He was a warrior to the very end. He actually came home for one day over the Father’s Day weekend, and we hoped he’d be home longer,” said Lewis, of San Diego. “He was an incredible father and an incredible man.”

Coryell’s death on Thursday was announced early Friday by officials with the San Diego Chargers, where Coryell served as the head coach of the Dan Fouts led Chargers between 1978 and 1986 to lead one of the most prolific passing attacks in the hstory of the National Football League.

Don Coryell (October 17, 1924 – July 1, 2010) was a former American football coach, who coached in the NFL first with the St. Louis Cardinals from 1973–1977 and then the San Diego Chargers from 1978-1986. He was well-known for his innovations to football’s passing offense. Coryell’s offense was commonly known as “Air Coryell”. He was inducted into the San Diego Chargers Hall of Fame in 1986. “It’s crazy that when you look back at the history of this city, he got hired on the same day as that PSA crash,” said Hank Bauer, who was a running back and special teams star with the Chargers then. “That really was one of the darkest days in this city’s history and it became one of the brightest days in the history of sports.
