Emmer releases K-12 budget plan

Under persistent heat from DFLers, Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer unveiled another part of his budget plan Friday.
The state representative from Delano released a plan for paying for education that his campaign said would “protect classroom funding.”
Under the plan, he would not reduce funding for elementary and secondary education during the next budget biennium, which is set at $13.3 billion.
For school districts that were sent a $1.4 billion state IOU for the last school year and the coming one, Emmer said he would begin to repay that in 2014.
Emmer said he also will push for classroom reforms, including increasing academic standards and ensuring teacher accountability, his campaign announced.
Earlier this week, Emmer announced a plan to reduce taxes by $626 million, in an attempt to encourage investment and hiring, while expanding tax credits and exemptions for businesses.
Emmer’s rivals, DFL candidate Mark Dayton and Independence Party nominee Tom Horner, have criticized Emmer for lacking specificity in dealing with the state’s looming budget deficit.
